How I Became a Caps Fan

heynickyyouresofine:

A couple years ago, we drove up to DC for my little sister’s 8th birthday to catch a Caps game. I think I was probably the most interested in the game, even though I only had a mild interest in hockey itself at the time. Then I had a nearly year-long NHL hiatus until the 2011 Winter Classic. I was watching passively, really, until the end, when the Capitals won. I said something about how Sid and Alex should have fought. I was into Sid’s looks at the time, so my mom asked me how many hot guys would have been in that fight. I thought about it and googled Alex Ovechkin out of curiousity. Soon, I developed a major infatuation with him and, through him, the entire team.

Yes, I started as a bandwagoning fangirl, but am now one of the most sincere fans you’ll find. Hate me if you like, I don’t care. I’ll stand by my team no matter what.

How I became a Caps fan

hiccupingduck:

It was two seasons ago, and my dad took me to a game. Mind you, I didn’t know a thing about hockey or the Capitals. We go in and get to our seats and I immediately fell in love with the atmosphere. It was like going to a concert. The anticipation and not knowing what exactly happened in a hockey game made me so excited. And then…the Caps hit the ice.

From the moment I saw them speeding onto the ice, I fell in love. As the game started, I remember having my eyes glued on the ice and listening to the sound of the puck and the checks, and noticing that the crowd was watching eagerly as well. When the Caps scored, everyone around me stood up and cheered. When some Red Wings fans (very few of them were there) shouted “Let’s go Red Wings,” the whole section shouted “RED WINGS SUCK!” Coming from DC and being a fan of DC sports, we don’t get a lot of fans rooting for the team. Let’s take the Nationals; you go to a Nats game and there are more fans for the opposing team than the home team. So, of course this was a huge surprise for me.

We won that game. And with that game, I became a huge fan of the Capitals and a huge fan of Nicklas Backstrom…

…but that’s a different story.

holidayblues:

I moved to the US around a year and a half ago, and I was never really that much into sports. In December 2010, though, there was the news about the Winter Classic all over the newspapers, and since I had nothing better to do, I sat and watched the game on my computer, and I was hooked. Five months later, here I am!

How I Became A Fan

koogle:

My dad’s company has a suite at the Verizon Center and one night my dad took me to a game. I’m not a sports person. I don’t care about football, or baseball, or soccer. But when that horn sounded and everyone started chanting and clapping “Let’s Go Caps!”, I became a fan. When Ovechkin took the ice and started outsmarting everyone on the other time, I became a fan. And when Backstrom scored a goal and the video board showed his face with Super Swede under it, I became a fan. Hockey is now my life, and my team is the Washington Capitals!

I’ve never actually had an NHL team that I follow, since I’m a Swede and haven’t been that into the NHL until before last season.
So when this season rolled around, I found 24/7 somewhere, I can’t remember where. I watched the first part and I just fell in love with the Caps. Then I watched the rest of the parts and I knew that Washington was going to be my team.
So, yeah, not a glamorous story, exactly, but it’s all mine ;)

I grew up in a family of Hartford Whalers fans, so I was around hockey all the time. Living in DC, my mom used to take me to Caps games (esp. on the kids nights when I’d get the free ice cream in a mini-helmet) every so often, and I would always enjoy myself. Seeing Olie the Goalie play in the early 2000’s really hooked me in, and when the lockout hit, I realized I really, really missed the sport. I’ve been a devout Caps fan ever since. :D

I became a Caps fan this past January. I had been watching 24/7 and I kept hearing about how bad the Caps were and that made me want to cheer for them because I always cheer for the underdogs. After the WC, I started watching them more and I fell in love with the team. Now I don’t know what I’d do without them. They’re the best thing that ever happened to me.

My best friend had been trying for a while to get me interested in hockey. She is a Habs fan herself. Eventually, she convinced me to watch this year’s Winter Classic. At the start of the game, I had no allegiance to either team, but after a few minutes I fell in love with the Caps style of playing. Later that month, I surprised my friends and family by driving to Atlanta by myself to watch the Caps play the Thrashers. I was definitely hooked on hockey and the Caps!

I started randomly watching with my brother, who has been a lifelong fan, during the ‘07-‘08 season (or maybe it was ‘08-‘09, whichever season the Pens won the Cup). Anyway it was the start of our playoff series with the Pens and we actually went to Game 5 that year. We lost in overtime, but I was hooked. The rest as they say is history!

One of my best guy friends invited me to attend a Capitals game with one of his friends and his dad. His dad’s work received an extra box seat ticket so we had box seats.  I had never seen a game quite like it. I hated football, soccer, lax— all those games where you had to make goals on the other side of the field. Hockey was something new to me and it was amazing. My boyfriend played hockey to so i instantly got hooked on watching/attending games. Ever since I’ve attended numerous games and every game I’ve gone to the Caps have won!

After the 2010 olympics, I was PISSED! Sidney Crosby was on my serious hate list. A little while after “the goal” I noticed my sister was starting to take an interest in the Penguins & Sidney Crosby & I was not going to have that. So I asked my sister who Crosby’s rival was. She told me Oveckin, & after that I brought Ovechkin up 5 times a day. After a while I decided to research the Caps & watch a few games. I fell in love during the first game I watched. I haven’t been a fan as long as other people. But that doesn’t matter to me. & sure I may have become a fan to annoy my sister, but I remained a fan because of my love for the team. Go Caps!! Can’t wait for next season!!

My best friend told me about Ovechkin, and well shes A Crosby fan so she didn’t like him, so because of that I became very interested in finding out more about him, So I youtubed him like crazy and I just fell inlove with him, and I eventually started watching the Capitals play games, and I learned all the players and then I just fell inlove with the rest of the team, and now they mean the world to me. :)
